If you are an eBay store owner, and are great at selling your products but feel like you're all thumbs when it comes to HTML and eBay store design, why not consider our design services? Whether you're looking for a simple logo, or a complete custom eBay storefront package, we are eager to put our years of design skill at your disposal. Most eBay store owners agree, the better your store looks, the more sales you make. Many eBay stores are so basic, they get lost in the crowd. Others are so cluttered and confusing, the customer spends valuable time trying to navigate through a maze rather than making purchases. Let Solas Web Design help you find the happy medium between clean, simple navigation and a distinctive visual style that enables customers to recognize your eBay store immediately and feel confident shopping with you.

One of the areas of confusion for eBay store owners who are looking to customize their store is the terminology. You may know how you want your store to look, but aren't sure what the design elements you want are called. That can make searching for design help difficult. Let's begin by putting names to the various features your customized eBay store can have.

eBay Store Logo

This is an example of a 310x90 pixel logo. When you choose the overall layout of your eBay store, you have the option to use a small logo this size, or a much larger 'logo header'. You must pick one format or the other, and it's up to you what you like best. You also have 2 other options to consider when it comes to an eBay logo. You can buy one that is ready-made like the example shown here. You purchase it from the design firm, tell them the name of your store, and they replace the generic text on the logo with the name of your store. Or, you can opt to have a custom eBay store logo designed completely from scratch with your choice of colors, visual elements and fonts. For example, if you sell camping gear, and you have a photo of a campfire you wish to have appear in your store logo, you can e-mail that image to the designer and they will design your logo around it. Or, if you do not have any photos or graphics, a top quality graphic designer will custom create the graphics you want. At Solas Web Design, our lead designer has 13 years of experience creating visual elements and she can accomplish basically any style or feeling you're looking for.

Custom eBay Store Logo Header

This is an example of the large header logos eBay store owners frequently use. They can vary in size, but as you can see from the above image, they are designed to run across the breadth of the screen. The header can also include nice bold buttons which link to the main categories of your eBay store, or it could feature an important product that you sell. As with the small logo, you may buy one that is ready-made and have the designer customize it with your name, or you can have one custom designed from scratch to your exact specifications, including any graphics or photos you have. If you don't have any graphics, a good designer will design them for you. The above is an example of a logo we created for the eBay store Cape Cod Treasure Chest. Because the owner of this eBay store also runs a website at http://www.capecodtreasurechest.com, she had some great photos to include in her custom eBay Store Header. We incorporated these, and designed appropriate graphics to complement the nautical feeling of her store.

eBay Store About Me Page

Put simply, the About Me page of your eBay store is your chance to tell your customer about you and your business. By hiring a designer to create this page for you, you will be able to incorporate any visual feeling you think will best represent what you are selling on eBay. One of the reasons that eBay store owners consider this to be one of the most important pages in their store is because it is the ONLY page that eBay allows you to include links to outside sources on. So, if in addition to your eBay store, you run a website, this is your one chance to direct eBay shoppers to your site. Why is this so desirable? Because when people buy directly off your website, you don't have to pay eBay's listing and selling fees. Makes sense, right? Some people like to include photos of themselves on their eBay Me page. We strongly advise also having some product images there. When you hire a professional designer to custom create your Me Page, you will be able to have it looking just as you want it to.

Custom eBay Store Listing Template

Every time you list a new item in your eBay store, the in-built program sets up your listing in a specific format. By hiring a designer to customize your eBay listing template, you have much more control over how your listings look. Backgrounds, colors and images can all be organized to showcase your inventory in a more appealing manner. Your listing templates should continue the overall design theme of your store, thus branding your items as coming from you. This helps to establish your identity so that happy return customers know they are safe shopping with you when they recognize your design theme. You can purchase ready-made eBay store listing templates or have one custom created to your exact wishes. The great thing about the listing page design you buy is that you can use it again and again, each time you list a new item. When you purchase a custom designed store listing template from Solas Web Design, you receive the HTML code, and in the code are directions of where to insert your product images and your descriptive text. It is a good idea to have a basic familiarity with HTML if you are running an eBay store. All designers agree about this. It isn't that you need to know how to write code, but you do at least need to know what image tags look like. We are always happy to help a new customer understand the template we create for them so that he or she can use it each time they list a new item. After all, that's the whole point!

Custom eBay Storefront

Ebay allows a basic store to have 5 'store pages'. These are pages in your store which are in addition to your listings. The Me Page is an example of a store page. Another use for one of your store pages is as an eBay Storefront. This acts as a landing page for your store - it is the first thing that potential customers see. In general, a storefront page is very visual, containing your logo, and images of your most important categories. It may contain buttons linking to your main store categories, and also text about your eBay store. Many store owners love to have this page custom designed for them so that they give a bold, first glance impression to shoppers about what the purpose of their store is. Other store owners forego the use of a storefront landing page because they want their inventory listings to be the first thing the customer sees. The choice is yours. Our tip about eBay storefronts is to keep them simple. No Flash graphics please, or animations of any kind. These distract the shopper from the purpose of being in your store - shopping. And, unless you are selling music, having music playing is also a bad idea. It is a distraction. Remember, you set up your eBay store to sell products...not to entertain people. Keep the storefront simple and professional for best results. By choosing to have your eBay storefront custom designed, your designer should gladly incorporate your logo and desired photos or graphic elements. If you do not have a logo, find out if the storefront you purchase includes a logo design. Also, if you don't have graphics, you should be able to expect your designer to produce them for you. At Solas Web Design, we love coming up with themes for our clients' eBay stores, based on what they are selling. It really helps when the client has a good idea of what they want, but we're always happy to make suggestions.

Complete Custom eBay Store Design Package

Some eBay store owners purchase design elements for their stores piecemeal. Others decide to have their whole store designed at once. What can be confusing when you're shopping for a complete store design package, is that no two designers seem to be offering the exact same thing. It's so important that you read their listing carefully to make sure that everything you want is included in the package you buy. Some designers really confuse the issue by offering 10 different packages, calling them "Supreme", "Expanded", "Total", etc. These titles don't mean much to the buyer, so you have to read the listing to discover precisely what is included. Just to give an example, our Complete Custom eBay Store Package includes the following:

We've attempted to include everything you really need to have a streamlined and highly customer-friendly eBay store. By having us custom design the whole store, you know that everything will coordinate visually, rather than winding up with one of those abundant 'mystery meat' stores with different confusing visual elements on every page.

So, is that it?

Yes, our examples above are basically what goes into a customized eBay store. In addition to the main things we've listed, you can also have your navigation menu customized with graphics, and this is included in our Complete eBay Store package. But, that's about all there is to having your store designed into tip-top shape. Something that we're always encountering both on the web and in eBay are pages that not only look bad but which are doing their owners no favors when it comes to making sales. With programs like Microsoft Frontpage and the user design tools in eBay, lots of folks try going the do-it-yourself route. Now, some people become very proficient at this. They learn HTML, purchase good graphics software, etc. Others, unfortunately, just keep adding and adding to their pages until they look like a refrigerator door so cluttered with magnets, you just don't know where to look. The page owner loses site of the original purpose of their making an investment in an eBay store or website which was to earn a profit and they go on an odyssey of rainbow colors, animated gifs, photos of Grandma, etc. This would be fine if their only goal was to have a fun hobby, creating Internet pages. But, rarely would this have been their original intention. Please understand, we are not trying to insult anyone. We know that when it comes to personal style, to each his/her own! We are simply offering this advice because we like to see small business owners making maximum profits off of the money they invest each month for web or eBay store hosting. By keeping the style of your store consistent, clean and simple, you will make more money. Goodness knows, we all want to be doing that!

We hope the above tips about the customization of an eBay store have helped you to feel truly well-informed about the mechanics of all this. If you'd like us to design your store, please contact Ebay Store Designers today for a free consultation.
